Frequently Asked Questions
What is nisab and how much is it?
Nisab is the minimum wealth threshold above which zakat becomes due. It equals 87.48 grams of gold or 612.36 grams of silver. With gold around Rs 285,000 per tola, the gold nisab is roughly Rs 2.1 million; the silver nisab is far lower. If your zakatable wealth exceeds nisab for one lunar year, 2.5% is due.
Should I use the gold or silver nisab?
Scholars differ: many recommend the silver nisab because it is lower, meaning more people qualify and more zakat reaches the poor. Others use gold. For example, silver nisab may be under Rs 300,000 while gold nisab exceeds Rs 2 million. When in doubt, consult a trusted scholar about which standard to follow.
Is zakat due on jewellery I wear?
This depends on scholarly opinion: some schools say zakat is due on all gold and silver jewellery above nisab, others exempt jewellery worn regularly. A common middle view applies zakat to gold and silver jewellery but not to diamonds or gemstones. Our calculator includes a jewellery field — consult a scholar for your school's ruling.
Can I subtract debts before calculating zakat?
Yes. Immediate debts — money you owe and must repay soon — are deducted from your zakatable assets before applying 2.5%. For example, Rs 3,000,000 in assets minus Rs 500,000 in debts = Rs 2,500,000, so zakat is Rs 62,500. Long-term loans are usually counted only for the year's due instalments.
When should I pay zakat?
Zakat is due once a lunar (Hijri) year has passed on wealth above nisab. Many people pay in Ramadan for the extra reward, and it is fine to pay early or in instalments through the year. What matters is that the full 2.5% reaches eligible recipients within your zakat year.
Who is eligible to receive my zakat?
The Quran (9:60) lists eight categories, including the poor, the needy, those in debt, and travellers in need. In practice, most people give to poor relatives (not parents, spouse, or children), neighbours in hardship, or verified charities. Zakat cannot be given to mosques for construction or to non-eligible causes.
